Pol Roger

Making his first sale of wine in January 1849 due to his fathers illness, a legacy was born. Slowly expanding in the early years, it was in 1955 that a general improvement in sales could be felt. The range of wines was enlarged, and this gave an additional impetus to the development of Pol Roger’s fame. In 1961, a vintage rosé was launched. A few years later, a special vintage was born, the Cuvée Blanc de Blancs, with the celebrated Cuvée Winston Churchill born in 1975.

At the same time, the firm developed and reached 210 acres in 1999. The previous year, the United States had become the biggest export market. The year 2001 saw the launching of a cuvée called “Rich”, which is almost a demi-sec. In that same year, the logo and the bottle dressing were re-designed in order to bring more elegance and distinction. In addition to its own 92 hectare vineyard , the house has worked tirelessly to ensure sourcing of the best grapes from growers, in order to maintain its current level of excellence which is recognised worldwide.

In its 160 year history, Pol Roger has carved out one of the most flattering reputations in the select circle of the leading champagne brands. Surviving wars, prohibition and even the Russian Revolution, this house has survived and thrived. This recognition is the fruit of the firm’s unwavering dedication to two essential values: excellence and independence. Each of the wines which bears their name is treated as an impeccable ambassador of their history. For five generations, the descendants have been equally demanding, remaining loyal to the strategy initiated from the very beginning by the firm’s founder.

Excellence means the rigorous selection of the vinegrowers the firm works with, but also by strict selection of the grapes bought from them. Family members keep a close eye on all the operations, including details of the vinification; it also means that the family, in complete independence, chooses the blends which give birth to the wines. Excellence and independence are closely linked. One guarantees the continuing existence of the other and vice versa. It is not surprising, therefore, that Winston Churchill and even the British Royal Family should have made it their favourite over the years.

This refinement reflects a whole lifestyle. It is also a source of infinite pleasure. Pol Roger Champagne has a soul, created by the union of a family’s spirit and the character of a vineyard. The winery and the cellars are located on the celebrated and noble Avenue de Champagne in Epernay, in the very place where the heart of Champagne beats. The purity and nobility of Pol Roger Champagne is also the fruit of the know-how, passed down from generation to generation. From the harvest in the region’s best vineyards, to the painstaking work in the cellar, each gesture has its importance.
